Agarwood essential oil
Aquilaria crassna
Trầm hương · Thymelaeaceae
Wood, sweet and warm, with leather and an animal note no other wood has. It is deep, slow, and keeps changing for hours on the skin.
What is distilled is not healthy wood. The Aquilaria tree only forms agarwood when it is wounded or infected by fungus, and that dark, resin-soaked wood is the tree defending itself. The pale wood of a healthy tree is almost odourless, so the whole agarwood trade rests on a response to injury.
No two lots of agarwood are alike, and it is also the most adulterated oil in the catalogue. Growing area, the age of the wound, how the wood is soaked and how it is distilled all change the smell, so with agarwood a general description like this one is only a starting point. The analysis and the lot number are what is worth looking at.
