Cupressus essential oil
Cupressus torulosa
Hoàng đàn · Cupressaceae
Dry, warm wood, with resin and a thin thread of smoke. It is deeper than cedarwood and less sweet.
The Vietnamese name hoàng đàn needs to be read with care. Vietnam’s native hoàng đàn grows on the limestone mountains of Lang Son, is almost extinct in the wild, and its wood and roots were once a precious material for incense. The species on this page is Cupressus torulosa, the Himalayan cypress, a related species that is far more widely planted.
The two are close but not the same. With a name that carries so much value, the botanical name on the label is the first thing to look at.
