Geranium essential oil

Pelargonium graveolens

Phong lữ · Geraniaceae

Rose with leaves. The sweetness is close to rose, but it comes with a green, slightly minty edge that real rose does not have.

The oil is distilled from the leaves, not the flowers, and it is rich in citronellol and geraniol, exactly the two major compounds of rose. So the nose says “rose” first, and only a few seconds later notices the leaf.

That closeness is why geranium has long been used to extend or replace rose in blending. Setting the two bottles side by side is a good way to learn what real rose has that those two compounds do not bring.
