Tea tree essential oil
Melaleuca alternifolia
Tràm trà · Myrtaceae
Medicinal, earthy, slightly pungent, with a thin camphor note at the edges. Not sweet, and not trying to smell nice.
The main compound is terpinen-4-ol, not 1,8-cineole, and that is where it differs from cajeput. The two trees are in the same genus and their common names are close, but cajeput is astringent and bright while tea tree is deeper and cloudier.
This is the oil most often bought by mistake in its group, because labels frequently say only one word, “tràm”. The botanical name is the only thing that tells the bottles apart: alternifolia is tea tree, cajuputi is cajeput.
