Lemon essential oil
Citrus limon
Chanh vàng · Rutaceae
Bright, sour, clean, with a lemon-drop note in the middle. Lighter than the Vietnamese lime and with less of a green edge.
As with orange, most of the bottle is limonene, and what makes it “lemon” is citral, which is only a few percent. The more citral, the closer it smells to the real fruit, and it is also the first thing lost as the oil ages.
That is why lemon shows its age faster than any other oil. A fresh bottle is pointed and clear; an old one drifts towards turpentine and a hint of paint. Once you smell that paint note, the oil has oxidised, however far away the date on the label.
