Lotus essential oil
Nelumbo nucifera
Hoa sen · Nelumbonaceae
Sweet, cool, slightly powdery, with a watery layer and a little green bitterness underneath. It is far more reserved than jasmine or champaca.
The product is an absolute, and it is rare. Lotus gives very little aromatic material, so real absolute is always expensive and often replaced by ready-made blends sold under the lotus name. Pink and white lotus do not smell the same either.
Vietnam has a reference point few places share: lotus tea. What scents the tea is not the petals but the lotus “rice” — the white anthers on the stamens. The smell of lotus tea is therefore the smell of a very small part of the flower, and an absolute made from the whole flower will not be quite like that cup.
