Basil ct linalool essential oil

Ocimum basilicum ct. linalool

Húng quế ct. linalool · Lamiaceae

Sweet, slightly floral, on a base of green leaf. That soft sweetness is linalool, the same compound that makes lavender, so this chemotype is much gentler than the basil Vietnamese people know.

The same species, Ocimum basilicum, also gives an entirely different chemotype rich in methyl chavicol, and that one leans towards anise. Two bottles with the same botanical name smell like two different herbs.

If you expect the plate of herbs served with phở, the linalool chemotype will surprise you, because it is closer to the sweet basil of Italian cooking. The chemotype given on this page tells you which one you will get.
