Peppermint essential oil
Mentha × piperita
Bạc hà cay · Lamiaceae
Cold and sweet at the same time. The cold arrives a beat first, then the round sweetness of the leaf follows.
Compared with cornmint, peppermint has less menthol but more layers, so it is rounder and easier to like, while cornmint is straight and harsh. In both, the cooling sensation is not smell at all but the trigeminal nerve.
The chewing-gum and toothpaste smell you know is mostly isolated menthol. The whole oil has an added grassy, slightly earthy base that pure menthol lacks, and that base is what tells you you are smelling a plant.
