Helichrysum essential oil

Helichrysum italicum

Cúc bất tử · Asteraceae

Honey, hay, warmth, with a spicy note close to curry powder. Sweet yet dry, and very hard to file neatly into any scent family.

The curry note is not imagined. In Europe this very plant is called the curry plant because its crushed leaves smell exactly like that, although it is not part of curry powder. In the oil, the fruity sweetness comes from neryl acetate, and how much there is varies a great deal with where it was grown.

This catalogue has three Helichrysum species, and they are far apart. Italicum is the honey-and-curry one. The two Madagascan species lean firmly towards camphor and 1,8-cineole. The same genus on the label does not mean the same smell in the bottle.
