Juniper berry essential oil
Juniperus communis
Bách xù · Cupressaceae
Pine, resin, a little pepper, with a thin sweetness of ripe fruit. Clean and dry, close to a conifer forest after rain.
The main compound is alpha-pinene, so in the opening it is close to turpentine and frankincense. What belongs to juniper alone is the fruit layer underneath, warmer and rounder than pine needles.
If you know the smell of gin, you already know this one, because gin is essentially spirit flavoured with juniper berries. Oil distilled from the berries is round; oil from the twigs and needles is cheaper and harsher, so the plant part given on this page is the thing to check against the label.
