May chang essential oil
Litsea cubeba
Màng tang · Lauraceae
Lemon and lemongrass meet, sharper than either. In the opening it is so pointed it almost cuts.
It also evaporates very quickly: after ten minutes or so on a smelling strip only a faint green trace remains. That makes it the oil that shows most clearly that the “top note” is a real thing and not just a fancy way of talking.
The tree grows wild all over the mountains of northern Vietnam, with small round berries like peppercorns. It looks like pepper and smells nothing like pepper — a reminder that shape says nothing about smell.
